Landmarks

Landmarks are reference points, lines and areas that persist across surveys: a base station, a plot boundary, an access path, a control point. They are shown on the map, can be navigated to, and are included in exports.

Scope

A landmark is either global — visible in every survey — or belongs to this session only. Editing a session landmark keeps it in its own session. A landmark can also be hidden without deleting it.

Creating and editing

Data › Landmarks › Add Landmark opens the editor: a map with a panel you can pull up. Choose point, line or area on the map toolbar, then place vertices by tapping the map or with the position tools (GPS, GPS average, crosshair, paste). For a point, the position tools replace its single vertex; for a line or area, they move the selected vertex, or append a new one when none is selected. Drag handles reshape a line or area; the hollow handle between two vertices inserts one; double-tap removes one.

Name, description, category and colour are in the panel. A category you add in the editor is available immediately.

The Landmarks list

Tap a landmark card for its options: Show on Map (fits the whole line or area into view), edit, hide or unhide, delete. Swipe a card from right to left to delete it. On the map, long-press a landmark to edit it or to add a destination at its position.

Import and export

Landmarks can be downloaded or shared as GeoPackage, Shapefile (ZIP) or GeoJSON, and imported from the same formats. Each landmark’s colour and category travel with it: in QGIS the exported GeoPackage styles every landmark in its own colour, and KML placemarks carry their colour too.
