Landmarks

Landmarks are reference points, lines and areas that stay put from one survey to the next: a base station, a plot boundary, an access path, a control point. They are drawn on the map, you can navigate to them, and they go into your exports.

Scope

A landmark is either global, meaning it shows up in every survey, or it belongs to this session alone. Editing a session landmark leaves it in its own session. You can also hide a landmark instead of deleting it.

Creating and editing

Library › Landmarks › Add Landmark opens the editor, which is a map with a panel you can pull up over it. Pick point, line or area on the map toolbar, then place vertices by tapping the map or by using the position tools: GPS, GPS average, crosshair, paste. On a point, those tools replace its single vertex. On a line or an area they move the selected vertex, or add a new one at the end if nothing is selected. Drag the handles to reshape a line or area, drag the hollow handle between two vertices to add one, and double-tap a vertex to remove it.

Name, description, category and colour all live in the panel. A category you add in the editor can be used straight away.

The Landmarks list

Tap a landmark card for its options: Show on Map, which fits the whole line or area into view, then edit, hide or unhide, and delete. Swiping a card from right to left deletes it. On the map, long-press a landmark to edit it or to put a destination at its position.

Import and export

Landmarks can be downloaded or shared as GeoPackage, Shapefile (as a ZIP) or GeoJSON, and imported from the same formats. Each one’s colour and category travel with it, so the exported GeoPackage opens in QGIS with every landmark in its own colour, and KML placemarks keep their colour as well.

A multi-part geometry, say a MultiPolygon with three islands in it, becomes one numbered landmark per part.
A projected shapefile is transformed using its .prj. Without one, projected coordinates are refused and you are told why.
Landmarks already on the device are skipped when you import again. That includes global landmarks travelling inside a survey bundle, so importing several surveys from the same phone will not give you duplicates.
One file can bring in up to 5 000 landmarks.
